Smoky Buttes Ranch is named after the range of hills on which it sets. This area is said to be the northern most point to which Coronado traveled in search of the Seven Cities of Gold and was named either after the mist that appears in the valley or for the smoke from the campfires of the Indian tribes that made their winter camps here.
Today the ranch is home to Matt and Brenda Hemmer. The mission of the ranch is the restoration of rare breeds of livestock and preservation of their genetics. Through these activities, we also produce incredibly tasty, high quality food. Our breeds on the ranch include Wagyu cattle, Soay Sheep, plus five breeds of chickens; Salmon Faverolles, Welsummers, Smoky Blues, Erminettes and Red Erminettes. All the livestock on the ranch are protected by our teams of Great Pyrenees and Komondor guardian dogs. Welcome to our home. We think it is very special and hope you do, as well. Don’t hesitate to contact us for additional information.
